Planning Your Outfits

Let’s talk about styling for your session! The location and the
outfit choices are the most important parts of your session. Certain
color schemes go hand in hand with my editing style, so I am here to
help. My editing style has that boho and western vibe, so we want to
match that vibe. I put this blog together to help coordinate, not match.
I am always a text, email, or FaceTime away to help style.
First, we are going to choose the colors. For family sessions, I
recommend mom and dad dress themselves first then work down the
line and avoid people wearing the same colors. The best colors that
work well with my editing style are warm neutrals and rustic neutrals.
Attached will be images displaying the best color options, but when I
think of those neutrals I think of: creams, caramel, rust, shades of
brown, burnt orange, navy, maroon, and hints of black. During family
sessions, you can’t go wrong with all neutrals or you can add a small pop
of color. When putting those colors together, you can think of the color
wheel and the complementary colors in the wheel. For an example, a
complementary color to olive green or brown would be maroon.
So, what about white? In my honest opinion, white looks best with a
wedding dress. I want my clients to stick with creams over white due to
how it does clash with editing and other neutrals. Speaking of other
colors to avoid; neon, pale bright colors, or very bright colors. They do
not mesh well with my editing style and the images would not turn out
how we would like just based on the color of an outfit. Seniors, I know
school colors may not be in my color recommendations, but I will
always support capturing those high school memories.
Now let’s talk about patterns and texture in clothing. Plaid is
popular and I do like it, but only if it is subtle and only one person wears
it. I prefer to go more for no pattern at all or subtle, small shapes or
florals. I would much rather find outfits that have texture than have
patterns. Nothing can beat lace, velvet, waffle cloth, corduroy, or crepe
fabrics.
Once again, with seniors I do urge you to have one fun outfit
even if has larger patterns on it (but avoid those unwanted colors listed
earlier!) Another important thing to remember when searching for the
right outfit is what kind of dresses or skirts we want to wear. I prefer
mid length with flow or long and flowy in mothers, young ladies, and
high school senior ladies.
When they are long and flowy we can do so
much more with posing and get to play with the dress due to the
movement. Even in the summer months, I still prefer longer dresses or
skirts. I book my sessions in the evenings nearing sunset, so we always
hope it cools off some. In seniors, especially those involved in sports,
longer dresses cover up those bumps and bruises from sports.
